ECOsoil 4.0 – An innovative soil biodiversity research project – has been launched!

We are happy to announce that our research project "ECOsoil 4.0" has received positive funding approval through ZIM (Central Innovation Programme for small and medium-sized enterprises) from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Action (BMWK).

ECOsoil4.0 aims to illuminate different biodiversity patterns in the top layers of soil from different land use types and to connect them to environmental factors. By combining our DNA metabarcoding analysis and a machine learning approach, the goal is to develop a one-of-a-kind tool for monitoring and predicting soil health.

The project officially started in September 2021 and now after the preparation phase has been completed we have started the first sampling campaigns in April 2022 with our partners at Climate Farmers, Klim, HiPP Gruppe, foldAI and Umweltbundesamt (Umweltprobenbank). The first soil samples have already arrived in our laboratory at Leipzig are ready for the metabarcoding analysis. The first steps now are to extract DNA from the soil samples and to sequence DNA traces of animals, plants, fungi, and bacteria. We are looking forward to what we will find!
